HERFIO STATE GUIDE

Cigars in California.

Find cigar lounges, shops, bars, patios, and other cigar-friendly places across California.

7 cities

Los Angeles

Los Angeles is a spread-out cigar city. Woodland Hills and the Valley hold much of the lounge depth, the Westside has some of the strongest researched retail inventory, and Downtown adds a small but useful group of cigar-friendly bars and shops. Plan around the neighborhood you are already in rather than treating the city as one compact cigar scene.

↗

Oakland

Oakland’s cigar scene feels like Oakland: spread out, neighborhood-driven, and a little rough around the edges in the best way. Fine Ashhh in Uptown is the clearest place to settle in around cigar culture, while The Piedmont Tobacconist is the place to go when you actually want to browse a humidor and talk cigars. Beyond those anchors, the city is a mix of neighborhood smoke shops and bars or lounges that occasionally build a night around cigars.

↗

Oceanside

Oceanside’s cigar scene is small, but it covers a few different kinds of stop. Downtown has the city’s clearest sit-down cigar option, while Coast Highway, Oceanside Boulevard and Mission Avenue give you more straightforward places to pick up cigars on the way through town.

↗

Sacramento

Sacramento’s cigar scene is pretty easy to read once you know the pattern: a handful of cigar-first places near the central city, then neighborhood shops farther out when convenience matters more than lounge time. Start around 16th Street, Downtown and Land Park if you want to make an outing of it; look closer to home if you just need a cigar for later.

↗

San Diego

San Diego’s cigar scene changes block by block. The Gaslamp packs several lounges and cigar shops into a few walkable downtown blocks, while Old Town has its own small cluster of tobacconists and sit-down cigar spots. From there the map opens up through Hillcrest, Kearny Mesa, Miramar, La Jolla and Rancho Peñasquitos, where the reason to make the drive might be a serious humidor, a later-closing lounge or simply a good neighborhood retail stop.

↗

San Francisco

There are 42 active cigar-relevant places across San Francisco, but they are not all the same kind of stop. If you want a real humidor or lounge, start around the Financial District, Union Square, Polk Gulch, North Beach and Lower Nob Hill. If you just need to grab a cigar nearby, the neighborhood shops stretch much farther across the city.

↗

San Jose

San Jose does not have one cigar strip where everything is packed together. The better sit-down spots are around Willow Glen and The Alameda, while the shops spread west toward El Paseo de Saratoga and Stevens Creek, south through Almaden and Blossom Valley, and east toward Evergreen and McKee. Around here, it makes more sense to pick the kind of stop you want first — lounge, serious humidor, or quick cigar run — then choose the part of town.
