HERFIO GUIDE
Where to buy cigars in San Francisco.
You can buy a cigar all over San Francisco. The trick is knowing whether you are walking into a real tobacconist, a solid neighborhood shop or a convenience counter with a few cigars behind it.
THE SHORT VERSION
For a serious shop, start with California Tobacco Center, Dean’s, The Humidor, Broadway or California Smoke Shop. Total Wine is useful if you want a humidor while already buying a bottle, and the neighborhood smoke shops fill in the map when convenience matters more than depth.
California Tobacco Center
Polk Gulch
One of the safest bets in town when you want a real cigar shop instead of a smoke-shop counter.
One of the city’s deeper cigar shops, with a walk-in humidor and a broad premium selection on Polk. If you want time to browse instead of grabbing whatever is behind the counter, start here.
Worth knowing: The humidor is deeper than the exact brand list we can show online.

Union Square
One of the better downtown choices when you want a true cigar shop and not a mixed smoke store.
A proper Union Square cigar shop with a walk-in humidor, premium selection and a boutique streak. This is one of the better downtown stops when you actually want to browse.
Worth knowing: Some brand sightings are reported rather than fresh first-party inventory.

Financial District
Good downtown option when you need quality cigars without turning the purchase into a cross-city mission.
A small but serious cigar shop inside Embarcadero Center, with a humidor and recognizable premium names. A convenient Financial District stop when you want quality without leaving downtown.
Worth knowing: It closes earlier than many neighborhood smoke shops.

North Beach
A handy North Beach stop with enough cigar depth to be more than a liquor store side shelf.
A North Beach cigar-and-liquor stop with a better cigar bench than the storefront might suggest. It is one of the more useful places in the neighborhood when you want both a bottle and a cigar.
Worth knowing: It is still a mixed cigar-and-liquor store, not a lounge.

Lower Nob Hill
A better-than-average neighborhood cigar shop when you are west of Union Square.
A Lower Nob Hill cigar shop with a real humidor and a premium, boutique-leaning selection. The shop feels more cigar-focused than the average neighborhood smoke store.
Worth knowing: Most of the exact brand mix stays offline.

Mission District
A practical humidor stop when you are already shopping for wine or spirits on Harrison.
The Harrison Street Total Wine has an in-store cigar humidor, making it a practical one-stop if you are already shopping for wine or spirits. Selection can vary, so this is more convenience play than cigar pilgrimage.
Worth knowing: Chain-wide cigar inventory is not the same thing as Harrison Street stock.

Civic Center
An old-school tobacco shop with cigars in the mix and more tobacconist character than a generic vape store.
A classic Civic Center tobacco shop with cigars, pipes and smoking accessories. It has more old-school tobacconist energy than the average modern smoke shop.
Worth knowing: The current brand list is mostly offline.

Nob Hill
The place to go when “interesting” matters more than “largest selection.”
One of the strangest and most interesting cigar stops in the city: a menswear shop inside the Fairmont that also deals in rare vintage, pre-embargo Cuban cigars. There is even a small smoking room.
Worth knowing: Come for rarity, not the broadest modern-brand wall in town.
See the full place profileHow we made this list: Every place here currently sells cigars. We put the cigar-first shops first, then work outward toward mixed retailers and convenience stops so a dedicated tobacconist does not look identical to a neighborhood smoke shop.
Editorial picks are separate from paid placement. Policies, hours, and cigar inventory can change, so the individual place pages show the underlying research and verification details.
