HERFIO GUIDE
The best cigar shops in San Francisco.
San Francisco has plenty of smoke shops, but only a handful are worth crossing the city for. These are the places where the humidor, the selection or the story gives you a reason to make the trip.
THE SHORT VERSION
Start with California Tobacco Center if you want the classic walk-in-humidor browse. Dean’s is an easy downtown choice with a boutique lean, The Humidor works well for a quick Financial District stop, and Broadway is the sleeper pick in North Beach. Vendetta is the wild card: less “cigar shop” in the usual sense and more a Fairmont curiosity with genuinely rare cigars.
California Tobacco Center
Polk Gulch
A real walk-in humidor, a broad premium bench and the kind of shop where browsing is half the point.
One of the city’s deeper cigar shops, with a walk-in humidor and a broad premium selection on Polk. If you want time to browse instead of grabbing whatever is behind the counter, start here.
Worth knowing: The humidor is deeper than the exact brand list we can show online.

Union Square
A compact downtown tobacconist with a walk-in humidor and more boutique personality than most Union Square retail.
A proper Union Square cigar shop with a walk-in humidor, premium selection and a boutique streak. This is one of the better downtown stops when you actually want to browse.
Worth knowing: Some brand sightings are reported rather than fresh first-party inventory.

Financial District
A convenient Embarcadero shop with a proper humidor and enough recognizable premium names to make the stop worthwhile.
A small but serious cigar shop inside Embarcadero Center, with a humidor and recognizable premium names. A convenient Financial District stop when you want quality without leaving downtown.
Worth knowing: It closes earlier than many neighborhood smoke shops.

North Beach
North Beach sleeper pick: mixed retail on the surface, but a surprisingly useful cigar selection underneath.
A North Beach cigar-and-liquor stop with a better cigar bench than the storefront might suggest. It is one of the more useful places in the neighborhood when you want both a bottle and a cigar.
Worth knowing: It is still a mixed cigar-and-liquor store, not a lounge.

Lower Nob Hill
A humidor-backed Lower Nob Hill shop with a premium, boutique lean.
A Lower Nob Hill cigar shop with a real humidor and a premium, boutique-leaning selection. The shop feels more cigar-focused than the average neighborhood smoke store.
Worth knowing: Most of the exact brand mix stays offline.

Nob Hill
Nothing else in the city really looks like this: menswear, the Fairmont, and rare pre-embargo Cuban cigars in the same room.
One of the strangest and most interesting cigar stops in the city: a menswear shop inside the Fairmont that also deals in rare vintage, pre-embargo Cuban cigars. There is even a small smoking room.
Worth knowing: Come for rarity, not the broadest modern-brand wall in town.
See the full place profileHow we made this list: We favored places that feel cigar-first when you walk in: real humidor depth, premium or boutique selection, useful brand evidence and a reason to browse. General smoke shops only move up when their cigar offering is clearly more than an afterthought.
Editorial picks are separate from paid placement. Policies, hours, and cigar inventory can change, so the individual place pages show the underlying research and verification details.
